The hospital staff, like many in Haiti right now, are doing the best they can with what little they have. "We have had no significant medical supplies delivered in weeks." Food has also been tough to come by, although the World Food Programme has been trying to fill in the gaps. But its supplies are dwindling, too, and there have been shortfalls in donor funding for the UN's Humanitarian Response Plan. Clarke was able to return to the capital of Port-au-Prince earlier this month via a World Food Programme helicopter.

The FTC and DOJ announced it would be sending $9 million in refunds to 22,000 student-loan borrowers. It's a result of a company that was convicted of illegally charging borrowers for debt relief services. The FTC in 2020 banned the company from providing debt relief services, and the same year, a federal judge sentenced Frere to 42 months in prison. Most recently, the FTC announced on Monday that a federal court halted operations of two companies that misled borrowers into paying for debt relief services, scamming them out of $8.8 million. And in June, an additional 37,000 borrowers began receiving $3.3 million in refunds following accusations of misleading debt relief behavior by separate companies.

Apple CEO Tim Cook told U2 there was "something not right" about giving their art away for free. Cook also questioned whether the album would only go out to U2 fans, Bono said in a new memoir. U2's "Songs of Innocence" album was given away for free to 500 million iTunes store users in 2014. Instead of giving users the option to download the album, Apple automatically put the music on their devices. He said: "A U2 album that some would have taken seriously was instead turned into an album that seems as pointless as it probably is.

The themes become more complex, the clues get trickier, and you might find yourself going, “Huh?” more times that you might be comfortable with. That, in combination with the new clue types we’re about to show you, is part of what raises the difficulty level of Wednesday and Thursday puzzles. One devious type of clue to look out for is the question-mark clue. For example, if you see a question mark in the clue “Web site?” you can assume that some wordplay will be involved. Another difficult clue type can be seen inside quotes.

The name is self-explanatory: It’s a grid with no theme answers. Because of the added space, themeless puzzles are afforded more room for fresher answers, which moves the needle toward their being naturally harder to solve. Sam Ezersky, a digital puzzles editor, said, “We save our fireworks for Friday and Saturday, if you will.”The other factor is that in themed puzzles, the construction is limited by the theme itself. You can use the skills you’ve already learned from the puzzles you solved earlier in the week to help you solve a themeless. “Light” has appeared in New York Times Crosswords 22 times since 1993, according to XWordInfo.com, an online database of New York Times Crossword puzzles.

“Finding the pangram first is like opening a present that has lots of little packages inside,” said Susan Rakov of Santa Barbara, Calif., because there may be words inside it that will also be counted. Sometimes you may spot smaller words that don’t include the center letter but might be part of an accepted compound. “When you get stuck, leave and come back later with fresh eyes,” said Sharon Kittredje of San Francisco. One of the best parts of Spelling Bee is that you can put it down and come back to it later in the day when you have time. Just let the letters dance in front of your eyes, without trying too hard to order them — gives your subconscious brain a chance.”
